Abercrombie & Fitch, which opened its first store outside of North America this spring in London, announced plans Tuesday for its first store in Asia.

The teen fashion retailer said it has signed a lease for a store in Tokyo that will open in late 2009 in the city's famed Ginza shopping district.

Encouraged by the success of its store on London's celebrated Savile Row, Abercrombie begun to expand overseas. Chief Executive and Chairman Mike Jeffries said in May that the London store was on track to generate more sales per square foot than the company's flagship store on New York's Fifth Avenue.

Abercrombie, based in this Columbus suburb, operates 362 Abercrombie & Fitch stores, 186 abercrombie stores for children, 418 Hollister Co. stores and 17 RUEHL stores in the United States. It also has three Abercrombie & Fitch stores and three Hollister locations in Canada.
