Streaming Queer: September 2024

Andrea Marks Joseph READ TIME: 17 MIN.

September's queer streaming offering is jam-packed! There's so much gay goodness happening on screens this month that we almost couldn't include it all –which is a wonderful problem to have! We are fully in our medical drama era with Season 21 at Grey Sloane Memorial Hospital welcoming an openly gay chaplain, Zachary Quinto starring in a new series about an unconventional but gifted gay neurologist, and Manu Ríos as the star of a hot new Spanish hospital drama from the creator of "Elite." For this month's dose of wholesome fun: Brian Jordan Alvarez is a gay high school English teacher in the comedy series he created, and Will Ferrell takes his longtime best friend on a roadtrip to discuss and celebrate her coming out as trans.

If you're looking for darker, more twisted delights: Cult classic "Jennifer's Body" comes to streaming in celebration of its 15th anniversary; Laverne Cox is a cunning, cunty villain manipulating teenagers into beautifying surgery; Demi Lovato's directorial debut is a documentary interviewing fellow child stars; and there are two new projects from Ryan Murphy –one ripped from the headlines, the other filled with neon lights and religious signs. We've also got a pregnancy-friendship comedy from Ilana Glazer, a cutthroat French fashion-family drama, and in case you haven't heard... It was Agatha All Along! Happy streaming!

"Breathless" Season 1

Manu Ríos reunites with "Elite" creator Carlos Montero for the first Netflix Original medical drama, "Breathless." The show is set at a public hospital in Valencia, Spain, where doctors are struggling to cope, not only with finding work-life balance while looking after patients, but with the tension of the political and economic system they're working under. Per the official synopsis: "The arrival of a distinguished patient highlights the complicated situation of the public health system, lighting the fuse for what is to become an unprecedented and drastic strike." The trailer introduces us to Ríos' character, Biel, and then immediately shows us a scene where two men are hooking up. Though it's unclear if Biel is queer, the show certainly knows the kind of tension we're hoping to see, and we're confident it'll deliver. "Breathless" is giving "Grey's" meets "New Amsterdam" with a hot, Spanish cast and we will be tuning in for the drama.

"Breathless" Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.

"Jennifer's Body"

This playful, campy, devilishly delicious film filled with sapphic desire and feminist rage is celebrating its 15th anniversary! 2009's bisexual babe Megan Fox and a sweet Amanda Seyfried absolutely killed in this film about quiet, introverted Needy (Seyfried) and her childhood BFF, popular girl Jennifer (Fox) who starts to show some unsettling signs of being more than just high-school evil, and actually evil-evil, as in, possed by a demon. A demon who has developed a taste for men. This is the film that brought us the iconic line: "You're killing people." "No, I'm killing boys." As we head into Fall and prepare for a season of chilling horror and queer scream queens, "Jennifer's Body" is the perfect place to start.

"Jennifer's Body" is available to stream on Hulu from September 1.

"English Teacher" Season 1

Out comedian Brian Jordan Alvarez is the creator and star of a workplace comedy that's giving "Abbott Elementary" vibes –but with teenagers, ethical dilemmas, queer romance, and queer humor. "English Teacher" follows Evan Marquez (Alvarez), "who often finds himself at the intersection of the personal, professional and political aspects of working at a high school" in Austin, Texas. We meet Evan's coworkers (who range from his best friend to the PE teacher who may have good intentions, but continues to say the most offensive things out loud) and his too-cool-for-school students, following along as he navigates the school system and asks the question: Can you really be your whole self at your job? Also: Are the kids alright? (From their casual vaping in school halls, creatively and convincingly inventing illnesses to get out of participating in class, and fighting over whether it's offensive to learn another language... It seems like they are!)

"English Teacher" Season 1 premieres September 3 on Hulu.

"The Perfect Couple" Season 1

"They're rich. Kill-someone-and-get-away-with-it rich." Based on Elin Hilderbrand's best-selling novel, "The Perfect Couple" follows Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson, "Bad Sisters"), who's about to marry into one of Nantucket's wealthiest families. The groom's mother, a famous novelist played by Nicole Kidman, spares no expense on the high-society wedding. But then, hours before the ceremony, a dead body appears on the beach. What may have been dismissed as an accidental drowning now prompts an investigation into everyone's closely guarded secrets, and the extravagant, celebratory spirit is quickly replaced by suspicion. The show's writer and creator, Jenna Lamia, describes "The Perfect Couple" as: "juicy, elegant, tense, and a little bit sensual. It is my favorite kind of show to watch; a thriller with multiple love stories embedded in the narrative." With strong "Big Little Lies" vibes, and an incredible cast including "The White Lotus" fan-favorite Meghann Fahy, Liev Schreiber, and Dakota Fanning, we'll have the champagne ready the minute this releases.

"The Perfect Couple" Season 1 premieres September 5 on Netflix.

"Emily in Paris" Season 4 Part 2

This stylish second set of "Emily in Paris" episodes takes us to Rome! The outfits are still over the top, the romance is still pulling the titular American in different directions, and there are still gorgeous men everywhere she looks. Hot French chef Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) and gorgeous British numbers guy Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) are both still in the picture, and we have a new addition to Emily's potential dating pool of men whose lives intersect with her job: Italian businessman, Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini), who takes Emily on a spontaneous adventure around Rome. There's a new addition at her office, too: Sylvie has hired another American! Meanwhile, Camille is dealing with heartbreak of [redacted, in case you aren't caught up yet] and her girlfriend Sofia going back home. She invited Camille to join her in Athens, though... Will we see them reunite?

"Emily in Paris" Season 4 Part 2 premieres September 12 on Netflix.

"How to Die Alone" Season 1

Equal parts emotional, empowering, and entertaining, "How to Die Alone" follows Mel ("The White Lotus" actor Natasha Rothwell, who created and produced the show), "a broke, fat, Black JFK airport employee who's never been in love and [has] forgotten how to dream" –until a near-death experience inspires her to stop waiting for a sign from the universe to start living, and become the sign from the universe. "Fire Island" actor Conrad Ricamora plays Rory, Mel's coworker and friend, who in the trailer alone is seen expressing concern about Mel's "sad twerking" and fulfilling his workplace bestie duties of noticing hot men together. Mel and Rory spend episode two on a "prescription drug hunt in the airport's underbelly" because Mel's still in pain from her near-death accident. A friend in need is a friend indeed!

"How to Die Alone" Season 1 premieres September 13 on Hulu.

In Vogue: The 90s" Season 1

This fashion insiders documentary covers a decade that (in Anna Wintour's words) "changed our world" –defining the supermodel, making style icons of musicians, and shaping the future of the fashion industry. Each episode in the six-part series centers a "defining 90s moment" as told by Vogue editors Anna Wintour, Edward Enninful, Tonne Goodman, Hamish Bowles, and an A-list cast of fashion icons and sartorial stars: from Kate Moss and Kim Kardashian, to Missy Elliot and Mary J. Blige –even Baz Luhrmann and Hillary Clinton.

"In Vogue: The 90s" Season 1 premieres September 13 on Hulu.

"Uglies"

Based on Scott Westerfeld's novel of the same name, "Uglies" is set in a dystopian society that requires cosmetic surgery for everyone who turns sixteen, changing them from a naturally born Ugly to a Pretty. Tally (Joey King, "A Family Affair") has been looking forward to this operation, but when her birthday arrives, she begins to learn there's far more to the celebrated "elegant procedure" than she was told. The cast includes Chase Stokes ("Outer Banks), and Keith Powers as Tally's love interest, but we're here for Ms Laverne Cox as Dr. Cable, the cunning, "inarguably beautiful" villain who works for a secret police force that monitors what Uglies do within the city. Her work includes manipulating people into believing that all their problems disappear when they become Pretty, and blackmailing teenagers to get them to infiltrate the Smoke, a secret settlement in the wilderness where Uglies go to escape from having to get Pretty surgery. Dr. Cable gives Tally an incredibly cunty ultimatum that prompts the teenager's moral dilemma: "Infiltrate the Smoke or stay ugly."

"Uglies" premieres September 13 on Netflix.
