HUD Sec. Ben Carson Makes Transphobic Comments: 'Big, Hairy Men'

Friday September 20, 2019

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson is coming under fire this week after the Washington Post reported that he made transphobic remarks at an internal meeting to other H.U.D. employees.

The former Republican presidential hopeful reportedly said he was worried about "big, hairy men" trying to enter women's homeless shelters, sources told the newspaper. Those people were present at the meeting and interpreted Carson's remarks as transphobia.

During his visit at the H.U.D. San Francisco office Tuesday, Carson also reportedly said that society can no longer differentiate between men and woman, two of the agency staffers told the Post. The newspaper adds that Carson's remarks visibly shocked a number of the 50 staffers attending the meeting. One women even walked out in protest, staff sources told the paper.

Since becoming H.U.D. sectary, Carson has weakened Obama-era protections for trans people, saying he believes in equal rights and not "special rights."

In a statement, a representative for Carson told the Post he "does not use derogatory language to refer to transgendered individuals. Any reporting to the contrary is false."
