Actor Nick Cannon is coming to the defense of Kevin Hart, who stepped down as host of the 2019 Oscars last week after anti-gay tweets and jokes he made during his standup surfaced and spread around social media.

Cannon retweeted old tweets from comedians Sarah Silverman, Amy Schumer and Chelsea Handler that feature gay slurs. When retweeting Handler, who wrote "This is what a fag bird likes like when he flexes" in 2010 - which came with a now-deleted photo - Cannon wrote: "Interesting I wonder if there was any backlash here..."

In her 2010 tweet, Silverman wrote "I dont mean this in a hateful way but the new bachelorette's a faggot." Cannon wrote: "And I fucking love Wreck it Ralph!!!!" Silverman voices a character in the children's film. Finally, he retweeted a message from Schumer in 2011, who wrote: "Enjoy skyfall fags. I'm bout to get knee deep in Helen Hunt #thesessions." Cannon added: "I'm just saying...should we keep going???"

Cannon's point seems to be that he thinks comics should be able to say what they want, whether or not its politically correct.

"You know I've been saying fucked up shit since twitter started!" Cannon replied to a fan. "I don't play that politically correct bullshit! Fuck politics!! Only Truth!"
